Raise, new art print

Woohoo! First official full week of my new blog schedule, if you missed it last week, Monday’s are Art days. I wanted to share a bit more with you about my latest art print, Raise.

Its my third print since starting this part of my art journey. I really feel like there’s been a learning curve with picking up new techniques and coming to grips with the differences between traditional mediums that were my go to’s and this. Besides the fact that I can not, as of yet, go color in bed while watching tv, that is a goal for the future.

In the first piece, Wind, it was mostly, as Mr called it, scratching an itch. I was pretty geeked about giving it a go and went to town on colors and layers. She turned out very painterly with “brush” strokes and vivid colors; though I worked on it so much my hand was not pleased, I pretty much got obsessed (ha). I don’t know about you, but when I get in the zone with something it can go for hours and not realize its been almost the entire day. Whoops. It was a pretty satisfying scratching though.

When that was done I went on to Stars and built on that first piece by trying some different things with masking and layers. It was another time where I went in the zone and was told by hand and neck that it was not cool, you needed a break. I was still happy with how it turned out, screw you hand and neck (jk, kinda).

Now with Raise, while resting my hand, I watched some videos and researched brushes and did that background work that was pretty much skipped to scratch the itch. I also moved my desk around and got some things to make it more ergonomic and zone friendly. Its still an ongoing experiment, especially with pen grips and such, but already a vast improvement.

Back to the art though.

She has a lot of texture and its still painterly but also smoother, the hair especially has depth and looks like it has locks. More subtle type details than Wind and Stars. Can you tell I like it?

How you layer color in digital is way different than my go to traditional, markers, though you could probably achieve similar results with paint. Her skin started out with a base of hot pink, yes, hot pink. Then layered up with other pinks, oranges, purples, blues, browns and greens, if you look closely I bet you can pick out a lot of those colors. Her hair has a blue-green base, layered with navy, purple, grey, yellow and paler colors of blue and a neon-ish green. I work bottom up with my markers as well, but its light to dark, with this you could go back and forth until happy.

That’s the rub with digital… you can basically work on the same piece ENDLESSLY. I bet the time to finishing will come down as I learn more but dayumn, endless gobstoppers have nothing on this thing.

With Raise done, now I have to come up with my next print, I’ll admit I’m a bit low on inspiration at the moment, maybe its the cold.

I hope you liked this little behind the scenes story. If you have questions or something you’d like to see or read more about just let me know. I’m obviously not a digital painting pro but an old hat (so old, so old) at many other digital bits and bobs.
