I’m don’t think we’re Inky Girls but I liked the ring of it :) I’m joining the Pink Ink Sketch Challenge team! This is a nice team as its no pressure, perfect for me! I wouldn’t be able to swing it otherwise lol. Its a bi-weekly sketch challenge with a fabulous team of girls you probably already know. If you notice, I follow Miss Winnell the Waffle Queen every where and now we’re together again.

Today’s sketch is brought to you by Cherie! I gave a different sort of interpretation on it as I am not great and the gorgeous layering that a lot of cardmakers are. I make it work though! Or I think so :/ For my card I used papers from Sass, embellie by Design by Diana (yes I’ve in love!), Twinery twine, tape from AC, Memento ink, Tattered Angel’s Glimmer Glam and Copics to color Balloon Kaylee.

Hop over there and check out the awesome sketch and see how you can rock it! The team is linked up top in my Links page if you’re curious about the rest of the Inky Girls :) (Its stickin!)

I shall now get back to work on scanning 14 images and thinking about another video… any requests for Copic tuts? I finally have a lighting set up that works fab and YAY vids on the way!

How are Moo doing today? I kinda held off doing a post today because I have 2 things to share that are purty fun but both are behind lol. So instead I have a fun card to share! I hope you likey :)

I used Mooey and colored him as a ginger. I thought he’d make a cute red-spotted cow. I paired him up with the pattern paper from Studio Calico (how flippin PERFECT eh?) and the edge strip from Sassafras. I stamped the sentiment with Blue China Distress Ink and Moooey was stamped with Brown Memento.  I entered it into a PaperCrafts color challenge but never posted it here, DUH me!

I’ve got a couple of fun things coming up like I mentioned, one is a new Copic vid and the other is still a surprise :) I have to let them go first lol I should have that tomorrow. I’m excited! I’ve got a couple other fun things I’m working on that I don’t have ready yet but they’re going to be fun! Don’t forget to read Wednesday’s post about making your Dream an Idea if you are an aspiring Creative Biz owner! :)

Happy Thursday! 1 day left until the weekend :) Hubs has to work all weekend so its not going to be really any different around here but the idea that its the weekend just makes the day that much sweeter :) . Just as a little side note while I’m talking about my hubs, he didn’t get the position he applied for :(  The choice was taken out of the bosses hands where he applied by a higher up or he would have. Boo. Hubs is bummed but not too bad. The person he interviewed with was very apologetic and said he would call him first if something else came up.

For this card I used Balloon Kaylee with papers from Sass, AC and Pink Paislee. But the big star that totally makes this card is the layered embellie from Diana’s Etsy Shop. You can believe the minute I saw them on her blog I hopped like lightning over and scooped them up! I even did fist pump when I clicked check out, I heart them that much! She has tons of more fabulous embellies and lil kits that you can pick up but I’m going to be all over then next set of these with the little balloon that she made. Be on top of it and visit her shop often if you’re going to beat me ;)

What has gotten you excited lately?

I want to start off by saying I am not a biz expert or guru. Everything I’ve learned and may share has been learned by an on the go basis. On the go meaning me going about my work or going to a book or website and reading and researching. What works for me may not for you.

Thinking about your creative dreams and goals may be what gets you thru your  regular 9 to 5 day job. You may love your job but you still may long for the day when you can give your notice and be out on your own working for yourself pursuing that goal, chasing that dream. Thinking and talking about your dream is really your first step, the baby step. The next step?

Making that Dream an Idea.

I know someone has already said “Geez, that is the same thing!” I don’t think it is. Here’s the difference: A dream is this inmaterial thing that is all unicorns and rainbows that takes many different shapes. It has the fuzzy rose colored edges that such precious dreams have. Making it an idea is where you pull that dream out of the rose colored rainbow world into the bright lights of reality and pin it down.

Its a bigger step than you might think.

Pinning it down can take a loooooong time, it can be really hard to pin down but its that next step. What are you passionate about? What are you good at? What do people come to you for because they know no one does it better? What do you want to do? See where it can get tough? You may be the best knitter you know but that is only the basis of your idea.

When I started working on taking Some Odd Girl from Dream to Idea I was lucky enough to have friends that planted the seed for me. Of course, I totally thought they were bonkers (one more than the other ha) but even though I dismissed their carefully orchestrated presentation but it stuck. I did start to dream about it. It took on that rosey sheen and stayed with me. I thought about it all day but I had TONS of doubts, I still have doubts. My art? Who the heck would pay for my art work? That was my biggest one.  But after it became all consuming I decided to take that next step and make my dream an idea.

I pinned it down.

Pinning it down is getting specific with what you want to do. My art as stamps was still such a general idea, where do you go next with such a broad stroke?  This is the part when I say it takes a while. Art or knitting on its own is not going to get you anywhere.

Research, plot and plan

Take that nugget, that thing you love to do, that gives you joy and can work for days on and refine it. Surf the web, browse shops, sit in your studio with the things that you’ve made and love and make some decisions. Narrow it down. If you can, narrow it down to one fabulous, awesome, unique thing. It may have been done before, that’s ok! Knitter, you may make a mean scarf and living here in Michigan I know we all need a scarf. What can you do with that scarf that’s unique?  Maybe its what you make it out of, eco-friendly, upcycled, hand dyed wool. Maybe its the design, scarf with a hood? Yes please! Really, I want one. Maybe its your color combos or the pom poms that you have on the ends of the tassels. I have always loved drawing people so I narrowed it down to people stamps. Then sketched for months until I came close to a style I liked. People stamps have definitely been done before but no one has my style :)

Really though, these are important decisions that will effect your creative biz for a good time to come but they still spend weekends in rosey dream world hanging with the unicorns. Next comes pinning  it more into the real world. Take that narrowed down, more specific idea, bonus points if you’ve made a few samples, and dissect it. Look at everything you can think of that could go along with it. I had people stamps, I had a style that I liked, but how the heck was I going to get it into stamps. Even if I got it made into stamps, how was I going to package it? Where would I sell it? Advertise? Materials? Cost? Time? Labor? Shipping? Pricing? Competition?

That’s what I mean by pinning it down. Make a list of what you would need to do, buy, look into or create your idea. Don’t discard anything! The more specific you can be with your dream made idea the easier its going to be for you to get started. What your idea is will define and shape the list. It helps to have someone to bounce the idea and list with. You can get so wrapped up in this that the most obvious things can escape your attention. Recruit your hubs, your mom, your best friend. They’ll be there for an opinion or as a product tester. Reach out if you have questions, what’s the worst that can happen? Email goes unanswered? :)

This is the beginning

It takes a lot of grunt work and time to take your rosey dream to viable idea but don’t let that stop you! The process if the most fun with any project, the results are just the gravy.

At night I’ve been trying to do something to keep my mind creative but not on work. I have a tendancy to ramble on and on in my own brain about this and that so to distract myself I took back up embroidery. No pressure, just a do while winding down sorta thing.

I may have to start doing ones that are a little more complex as this one only took me 2 nights of Hell’s Kitchen and Master Chef. His big pieces are felt and the rest is embroidered on by hand.

I’m not sure where the idea came from but there’s something fun about a monster with a heart balloon and buck teeth :) I did all the little stitches to try and give him some lumpy texture. Not sure if he’s furry or just kinda bumpy though. He’s now up on the wall with the other hoops in my studio/office.

If I keep this up I’m either going to have to pick up a new at night hobby or start selling them off as it could quickly become out of hand. I’ve already got a bird started too lol. What do you do to unwind and take your mind off of things? I might need another suggestion or two :)

Happy Monday! Its kind of a big day here. Hubs has an interview that I’m going with to. Well not with but driving and waiting in the car lol. He’s interviewing for a position in the company he currently works for but closer to home. Right now his drive, one way, in 1 hour. If he gets this position, it will be about 20-25 minutes less. That’s not too bad! Gas is flippin expensive! So fingers crossed for him today!

For my card I used Big Day Tobie, colored with copics. The papers all came from my scrap box, I believe they are October Afternoon, Sassafras, and AC. Brads are from Crate. I stamped the background with brown memento.

I hope your day is going to be fabulous! I’ve gotta get ready to leave then come back to work. Oh, another odd note on the position hubs is applying for. If he gets it he will be the direct boss of someone who used to be his boss. I find that ironic. :)

Howdy and Happy Friday! I have a mostly kid (and hubs ha) free day to look forward to tomorrow. What kind of craftiness are you looking forward to?

I have a little kinda CAS style card to share today. I’m kinda proud of this card because look! I tied a bow that doesn’t look stupid! :D YAY! I am NOT great at that, hence no bows usually on my cards. Though they always look so fantastic when I see them everywhere!

I used Tobie and Puppy for this card along with papers from AC and Cosmo Cricket. The Ribbon is May Arts that I’ve been hording. My lack of bow-skills might account for my hording. Tobie and Puppy is colored with Copics.

Puppy: E33, E34, E35, E40, E41, E42, BG72, BG75, Y26, Y28, R11, R12

Today at Some Odd Girl the challenge is Complimentary Colors! I know you remember using the color wheel in school or in your crafting so this is only a refresher for you right? Well Complimentary colors are the ones that appear directly opposite each other on the color wheel like Red and Green or Yellow and Purple. Following? GREAT! Choose your color pair, I chose blue-green and red-orange, and get a-craftin!

I’ve been asked if before if I choose the challenges after I make cards to go with them and the answer is a big NOPE :) I was temporarily stumped on this challenge like you might be but it was sure fun after the ball got rolling! I used Cheer Kaylee and I’d like to think she’s cheering on my choices ;)  The papers all came out of my scrap box, even the cardbase. I think they are Sass, WRM, and Core’dinates. Don’t quote me though lol. The journaling spot is Jillibean Soup with a Thicker ’3′ and my dymo made the rest of the sentiment.

Cheer Kaylee is colored with Copics:

Hair: E95, E97, E99
Skin: E000, E00, E01, R00, R01, R02
Clothes: BG72, BG75, BG78, YR 04, YR08, YR18

I know you can totally rock this challenge! Let’s see ya roll on the color wheel!

Well its usually light right now at the beginning of the day but you get the idea :)

Yesterday, maybe or I hope, you noticed an absence of a post here. I went in full seclusion mode (almost… the lure of emails is unresistable!) to get the designs done for the September Clear Release. I had a new Chrome extension to help me out called StayFocused, it limits your webtime and will block out sites if you go over while scolding you, and I’m happy to report it worked! At 6pm I sent all 6 designs and packing for a new set size on to our manu  to get sampled out for approval! YAY! It only took almost all day.

While I was working on that, you know how your mind can do one thing yet ramble on about other things? Maybe its me. ;) Even if you think your full concentration is on something you can yapyapyap at yourself. Well, I was trying to think of a blog post topic(s) and I’d like to share more about Some Odd Girl, what goes on, behind the scenes kinda things, etc and while I thought that I kinda got that feeling of… apprehension? Maybe the right word. We’ll go with that for right now at least. Put that towards, I’m not sure what to share let alone what anyone would find interesting. I’ve always had a “EEEK! Is someone looking at me?” kinda attitude, hence I’m not a pattern wearing girl, and this falls along in that. Its strange in its own way. As a business owner I like people looking at my products and biz but when eye gets turned in my direction I’m the girl you’ll see ducking.

This year though has been a coming out of my shell sorta of year long goal and I want to push that boundry. So all my rambling aside, I want to know what YOU want to know! Ask away, anything at all, I reserve the right not to answer but I’m going to make it my goal to do so. It may take a few posts or not but it’ll give me some ideas.

Ok, fireaway!
