Sew Awesome

by Kristy on April 30, 2012

I have a quickie card today. Just something cute and fun using one of the sentiments from the In Stitches Tia set, and papers from Cosmo Cricket, AC and a Sass banner sticker. I was trying to come up with something simple.

I’ve been reading thru all the comments from the giveaway I started on Friday (keep’em coming!) and I feel so inspired! I have a few ideas that I’m going to start working on that will come up soon. Its really awesome to see everyone happy to give their suggestions too :) I like sharing what I’m up to but if I can be helpful while at it, all the better!

HUGS! Remember the giveaway goes thru May 11th and you can enter as many times as you can think of well thought out suggestions so don’t hesitate to come back!

Cleaning Out My Stash Giveaway!

by Kristy on April 27, 2012

I had mentioned I was going to do it and I finally did! WOOT! My drawers and piles were really a mess and frankly a bummer. That’s when I realized I had some things that I wouldn’t use so why did I have them?
Light bulb moment!  rckhnds

So instead of throwing stuff away, I’m going to give it away! Each box or envie is a mystery prize. I’ve only included things that I thought someone could use though the stuff isn’t new. Not new as in a sticker sheet might be missing a couple or the ribbons are irregular lengths, that type of thing. Some of the things included are paper, ribbon, chipboard, metal findings, sticker sheets, thickers, letter stickers, journaling spots and more (as I can’t remember everything I put in lol). Papers are not full sheets and irregular sizes but if I didn’t think someone would find them useful, as in too small or too skinny, I didn’t include them. Just so everyone knows what’s up.

As you can see from the pic, I have 5 8x8x4 boxes and two large envelopes of stash to giveaway and they are all packed to the brim! I’ll take entries thru May 11th and announce the winners on the 13th.

Now the how to enter bit… I want to know what you want to know!

I’m really excited about retaking my blog and wonder what type of topics, especially when it comes to business, self-employment, entrepreneurship, art and copics you might like to see. These are the things I want to talk more about but the getting started has my stuck so I figured it never hurts to ask :> . I won’t say I’ll do them all but I always love suggestions and ideas.

Entries are open to anyone anywhere and I’ll be picking them based on if I can tell you are offering a thought out suggestion then randomly so “do what you’re doin” doesn’t count neither does “more cards” lol. Can’twait to hear form you!

Thinking about Pintrest

by Kristy on April 26, 2012

A few weeks ago Pintrest updated their terms of service and in the next couple days are going to be rolling out another update. When the hubbub first started about their terms of service it caused a lot of people to close down or quit using their accounts, I was one of those people. I quit using mine to wait and see what changes would be made. Since then Pintrest has made an update to their terms of use and while its a step in the right direction I think they still have a bit of a ways to go in giving people who are pinned proper credit.

Now, this might sound like I’m on the anti-Pintrest bandwagon, that is totally not true! I love the idea of pintrest! I love how it can take thing and spread them in a viral type fashion to a much broader audience. I love being able to collect pins on my own boards and do a little day dreaming, get new ideas or find some motivation. I love the implied compliment when people pin my stuff. I just wish that Pintrest would have repins go right to the original source just like the original pin (ETA: after posting I found out that this change has been put into action! SCORE!) and that to see uber big pic they had to go to the original source rather than the image Pintrest saves on their servers of your stuff. Their first change is a step in the right direction though so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt that they want to do the right thing.

Ok, now that my soapbox portion of this post is done, I was checking what had been pinned from my blogs and I got to thinking, until Pintrest makes the changes that people like me would like to see, what can WE do as an ethical, supportive and creative community of artists, consumers and general lovers of sharing?

First, if you don’t know how to see what’s been pinned form your blog go log in to Pintrest, then put this URL in http://www.pintrest.com/source/YOURBLOGURL/ , no http or www. For example mine for this blog is http://www.pintrest.com/source/theoddgirl.com/ You can see everything pinned from your blog this way.

So, how can we be more supportive of the places we love?

First, always pin from the original source. I’m guilty of just repinning too but when you think about it, you pin to be able to go back later and see whatever it was that inspired you so if you just repin your links will always just go back to another pin. Why not just take the couple seconds to get to the source and pin? Its a compliment to them and will make your pins more effective for you.

Second, if you are pinning from a blog or a site that you can narrow it down to a specific page like a post or product page DO IT. Sure you can grab the image when you pin from the home page amongst all the other pictures available but why would you want to? The 1 thing you want to pin is what inspired you, so get as specific as possible and give yourself and the source the most bang for your pin. You’ll be able to find that specific post/product later and for the source it will get passed around more effectively. I hate forgetting to do this then trying to go back and all I’ve pinned is the homepage. Its like having to rediscover a buried treasure without a map.

Third, everyone has the right to decide if they would like their stuff to be pinned or not. Pintrest has a small code that you can insert to your blog or site to prevent pinning. That said, if someone has done that, RESPECT IT. Don’t take a screen shot and upload the pin yourself. You can always bookmark the page. You would like your choice respected wouldn’t you?

And last, if you are pinning a product when you add a description of the product (to help people find your pin, just as you would a tag or keyword) add the price after the description with the $ sign. (ie: $19.99) Pinterest will place the price in the upper left corner of the image. Pinterest will also place all priced products on the gift tab on the top of their homepage. This does a couple of things, if you like a product and want it on your Wishlist board (I for one love that idea!), putting that will let others know its something that they could buy too. You might be introducing someone to a store or shop they had never heard of. Its so helpful especially for small businesses and handmade shop owners. We typically have little to no marketing budget so if you are going to pin it anyway just doing that one thing can be so supportive! Not only that but next time you are going over that wishlist, how easy would it be to decide what you want with the prices already there? :)

Doing these things not only benefits the source you are pinning from but makes your pins better and more informative to you. I would really hear what you think on ways we can use Pintrest better and be a more supportive community! Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Royal Speed Coloring

by Kristy on April 25, 2012

I have a new Speed Coloring video to share with you today! This is the one I mentioned was coming on Monday, my Black & White coloring of Royal. The original time was 45 minutes but I shrunk it down to 10. This is my first time coloring a B&W image, and like I mentioned Monday it really makes you think alot about contrast, color, shadow and highlight. I totally recommend it if you haven’t tried it before. I want to color it again lol! I used N0-N9, 0 and Rv91 for a hint of cheek color… so not quite completely black and white. ;)

Meet Renew!

by Kristy on April 24, 2012

Today we are revealing Renew. Poor Renew here has gone thru a series of names before me settling on one (more out of time constraints than anything else lol). She totally reminds Melissa of Pride & Prejudice and I can totally see the vibe! She looks like she’s simply climbed a grassy knoll and set herself down in the grass to soak up the peace and quiet. *inhale… exhale…* That feel is what really inspired the sentiments and accessories for this set. The flowers especially I wanted in a size to put in the grass or make herself a daisy chain for her hair. I’ve yet to do it but you know I’ll have to!

For the card design (papers are AC, Sass and October Afternoon) I actually lifted myself from this post and changed it up a bit. That card was one of my faves so why not lift it? ;)  Renew is colored with a whole tone of Copics and I did try to do a coloring video for this one as well but I got part of the way thru and the battery died on my camera *shakes fist*. That’s ok though, it was the last vid before getting my tripod so you wouldn’t have wanted to watch another shakey cam vid lol. I might try it again at another point though, with some different colors.

I made this card a couple of weeks ago so I’m not exactly sure on the colors I used or I would list them, I usually can eyeball it with great accuracy. I did add touches of Opaque White on this that I really like, namely on her eyes, hair and the scalloped trim of her dress. I still need a thinner brush but it turned out.

Not to toot the horn but remember if you order the Clear Stamps direct from us thru July 1st you can get yourself a raffle ticket for some CHA sets that we’ll be debuting at the show, they won’t be released until August, Sept and October but you can get them early. Go HERE for all the details. I frankly think the tickets turned out adorable if I do say so myself ;)

Meet Royal!

by Kristy on April 23, 2012

Today is Release Day! :DD

I’m always excite when its time to release some more stamps (the clear especially bc there’s so much more work involved) but for some reason these 2 have stolen my heart. When I draw up a design, they seem to take on a life of their own so I end up talking about them like they are their own person/animal/thing. That may seem kind of weird but that’s just how I roll ;) So anyway, our 2 new Nouveau Girls, Royal and Renew, seem so full of poise and that innate feminine grace that I totally love them.

When I create a card I usually create the card first then color the image that goes with it. For this particular card I got everything all done and for the life of me couldn’t decide what colors to color her with so I decided to do a B&W, mind you I had never done a B&W before so that was added fun lol. The toughest part of it is do make the different areas (skin, hair, dress) look distinct with a very limited tonal range while still keeping a good range of highlights, midtones, and shadows. This is actually a topic we talk about in our Advanced Class at Created for Color so I won’t bore you with all the specifics but I did a speed coloring video, that I’m going to share later this week, when I colored this. If you haven’t done it its really a great way to practice that! It makes you think more than a normal image does about those things. And then you can take that thinking and apply it to a regularly colored image.

I used papers from AC, Sass and Cosmo Cricket with Twinery Twine and Memento Ink on X-Press It. Royal was colored with the whole range of Ns (N0-N9), colorless blender (0) and RV91 for a hint on her cheeks. This might be one of my fav cards I’ve made in a long time!

by Kristy on April 20, 2012

I thought this card might be appropriate given the week :) It might be a kind of girly card but the sentiment still fits. I don’t think dude will mind lol.  I used papers from American Crafts (Dear Lizzy and Amy Tangerine), Cosmo Cricket and Sassafras, the blooms are Sass too. From my horde of Sass that I’m gingerly dolling out. Miss them tons! Gwen (from the Gwen in Bloom Some Odd Girl set) is colored with Copics.

Happy Birthday Dude!

by Kristy on April 19, 2012

Today is the day my baby boy turns 5! 5 Big years old! Its really ridiculous , in the last few months we’ve seen alot of growing up in him and he had a time when he went thru the terrible two’s that he never went thru when he was two but he’s made a big turn around and now he’s 5! *insert big mommy sigh*

So since he can take goodies in for his big day and his fav thing on the planet it seems sometimes is lollipops I thought we’d make some cake pops! Now all the tuts I’ve seen make doing it look pretty easy! I really thought with my decorating background that I would have no problem making these and the plan was to make them look like Angry Birds (that’s his other big love!).

Boy was I WRONG.

We learned ALOT yesterday while making cake pops! they did get finished but they don’t look like birds. I’m happy they are done and edible XD

First you have to bake up some cake. Dude wanted white cake so that’s what we did, 2 9×13 sheet cakes. That was mistake #1, after research later we found out *not* to use white because it is too moist to ball up properly. heh. Then you mix it with enough frosting to make a play dough like consistancey. Then the mix goes into the fridge until it sets and stiffens. After that you bring it out and make it up into balls.

Then put the sticks in them. Here’s mistake #2. The kids asked to put the sticks in. Well you’re suppose to put them in about 2/3s of the way but they either barely put them in or put them all the way thru. Then the balls go in the freezer to really harden.

After pulling them out we melted white chocolate on a double boiler and went to color the chocolate totally forgetting that candy needs a special colorant. Mistake 3. In my head “candy” means hard candy and I knew that means the colorant but chocolate is so milky it never occured to me that normal food coloring wouldn’t work. Needless to say we had to go out and buy the right coloring and more melting chocolate, though this time we got candy quick. This time when we melted and colored it worked really well!

After that is was time to coat the cake balls in the candy… the first attempt wasn’t that great…

but after a couple it wasn’t too bad…

But the overly moist cake mistake and the kids and sticks mistake came back to bite us as some of the balls didn’t want to stay on the sticks so that is what officially killed the Angry Bird cake pop idea :3 So we just made them a little colorful with some yellow candy streaks.

I just got home from his class and I can officially say they were a hit! There was even a fire drill in the middle and most of the kids made sure to bring their cake pops outside lol! You know that’s true lurv right there :DD

The next thing up for today is making his actual birthday cake! I’m much more confident in this one! We are making Angry Birds Black Bird. I hope it goes well, or at least better than cake pop follies lol!!!

Working on some new digis

by Kristy on April 18, 2012

I’m working on some new digi designs. I’m a bit, or more than a bit, behind of where I want to be running toward CHA  but I’m getting there! This little one is going to be one of the May Digi Release that is my current topic of work. I think she’s turning out really cute! For some reason her hat was a real stumper for a while, I simply couldn’t get the angle to look quite like I wanted. She doesn’t have a name yet but you might be able to guess what she’s going to go with ;) Now I just have to draw her up some friends :3 hmmmmm.

On the diet front, I weighed in yesterday at a 3.2lb loss since Saturday! WOOT! I’ve got a long way to go but as I’m just getting back into it and down 10lbs in just under 2 weeks, I’m quite pleased. Maybe when its all done, or half way even, when you can actually see the difference I’ll show a before and after but holy crap I’ll not tell you the total loss goal. Suffice it to say, we’re in it for the long haul.

Now if I can make those cupcake pops today without eating a ton we can call it a win of will power :)

Its a cupcake sort of day

by Kristy on April 17, 2012

I’ve seen a lot of cupcake-y projects around lately and since I’m on my diet and I can’t have one  :noes: I thought I’d make one. Gotta get the demon out of your brain somehow! lol. I used Baker Mae and wen’t totally Betty Crocker with her with the retro-y papers from Cosmo Cricket.

I’m the first to admit I am NOT the best baker but I spent 3 years as the Head Cake Decorator at a busy grocery store and decorated my own wedding cake so at least I can say I can do that well lol. My son’s birthday is on Thursday and I’ll be teaming up with my hubs, who IS a good cook and pretty good baker, to make his birthday cake and cupcakes for school. He wants all Angry Birds! I’m thinking of making Angry Birds cake pops… I haven’t make cake pops before so I have a little research to do lol. I thought pops might be easier for the kids to eat… not to mention super cute if I did a couple pigs and a couple birds, Dude would think I’m a miracle worker! XD

Wish me luck on that front! I’ll share how it turns out… or doesn’t. The toughest part I think will not be eating it all myself!

Supplies used:
Stamps: Baker Mae
Papers: Cosmo Cricket, American Crafts (the grey)
Bling: Doodlebug
Twine: The Twinery
