Artsy Friday – Trying a different type of Marker

I’ve been pretty lucky to get a new alcohol marker that is still in preproduction, but coming soon, to play with for the last week and a half. If you paid attention to the word coming out of CHA then you might have heard about the Chameleon Markers. They are a really cool and different approach to that marker type.

This is my first coloring with the Chameleons, I used the Digital Stamp Dandelion Fairy, and the way you blend and get the graduation of color is completely different than with a Copic or a Spectrum Noir. Its almost the marker equivalent to watercolors as you “water” it down with blender then build up your layers of color.

I feel like I get a softer look with these than my Copics (which I’ve struggled with there since I lean toward vibrant and saturated colors) though I’ve only colored a small handful of images and are working on my skills and how I like to build my color. I see these as a great compliment to the marker collection I already have and think they have some different type of versatility. Since I do both my colorings for Some Odd Girl and my realistic art (that I’ll hopefully share more in the future when I can) I’m interested in the differences in application between them too.

I’m sure in the future, when I feel I have a well rounded handle on this medium I’ll be doing some videos with them. I’ve talked with Nick and Julia from their offices and there’s some interesting and exciting happenings with them and what they have in the works.  I gotta say, I feel pretty special to be asked my opinion on these before they are even available. Keep an eye here, my personal Facebook page and on Instagram, I plan on updating my adventures with these as I go.

Have a great weekend!

How cool to be a tester! Can’t wait to see what else you color up with them. I think it looks great and that is a really nice orange.

I would have never known you were just testing them out as she looks beautiful and flawless! I really wish more companies would come out with affordable alcohol markers of quality. I’m curious to see what the pricing will be when these are released. Let’s just say while I just bought Spectrum’s I learned quickly today, while working on my SOG DT application, that there are some issues with Spectrum after all. So, looks like I’ll be slowly but surely buying a new alcohol marker brand : /

what was it that you didn’t like with the spectrums? I’m giving those a go too and would love hearing! I’m still mind blown on the color system lol

      • Kristy says:

that said, I haven’t had much play time either.

I’m finding the darker the color the harder it is to blend. I’ve even switched out to the brush nibs and I actually think the bullet point nib blends better than the brush. (The cost of the Spectrum marker after replacing to brush nibs are almost same cost as Copics and one of my brush nibs broke when inserting) Also the “pinks” are actually looking purple no matter how much blending you to do to get the pink so color blending to get other colors is hard to achieve as well. If you find a solution to better blending with them please let me know 😉

I’ll try out what you described and see if I can find a solution for you. Call me color tester! 🙂

She came out great. She is definitely softer than your Copic images, but, as you said, that could change with more practice. So fabulous that you are a beta tester, I can’t think of anyone better!

    • Kristy says:

you’re too sweet Tab 🙂 Getting it down as to how I like laying down my color with this different method will let me figure out that step. That said, I love the soft look (ala Anna Sigga) and have a heck of a time doing it with my Copics so its a good trade off.

Ooooh, so glad they are getting your opinion- there’s no one better!  I love the effect you got and I can’t wait to see what else you can do with them since they are so unique.  I’d love to see your realistic art turns out with them!

Kristy….that is beautiful! Glad that they ask for your opinion since I know you are very familiar with COPIC. I can’t wait to see your video with them and now I’m really excited to get these in our store. 🙂
